Why ETC Exists

ETC was founded in response to the humanitarian impact of the conflict in northern Ethiopia (Tigray), where widespread displacement left many children without consistent care or support. Witnessing these realities firsthand highlighted the urgent need for sustained, locally grounded action.

The organization is named in honor of Emohoy Tsehaynesh, an elderly nun and mother whose life was defined by quiet service to others. With humility and devotion, she used her own limited resources to feed and care for those in need until her final days. Her example of compassion and responsibility deeply shaped her family and continues to guide the values upon which ETC was built.

What began as one family’s commitment to care for children without caregivers has since grown into an organization dedicated to supporting the psychological and social well-being of displaced children and families. ETC remains actively involved in the day-to-day care of the children it supports, ensuring access to essential needs such as healthcare, education, nutrition, and safe living conditions, alongside consistent emotional and psychosocial support.

For adolescents, ETC emphasizes skill development and practical learning opportunities that help prepare them for future independence and entry into the workforce. By addressing both immediate needs and long-term growth, ETC works to create stable foundations that allow children and young people to develop with dignity, confidence, and hope.
